Tips for Choosing College Classes
It’s never too early to start planning your college class schedule. Whether you are a newbie freshman or entering grad school, considering your options is a wise way to get a handle on your courses.
Prioritize Gotta Haves over Wanna Haves
Who doesn’t want to take a fun class over fulfilling requirements? Remember, you are on campus to get that degree. Check out what classes you are required to take for your major and have a look at the prerequisites for future classes. Try filling most of your schedule with those gotta have classes and maybe add one fun class into the mix.
You might want to consider taking some of those prerequisites at a local community college or online during the summer to save money and allow you to move into some more interesting classes later. Just be certain your class credits will transfer to your college or university.
Check Out the Professors
You can use your school’s Reddit tool, or ratemyprofessor.com. Many colleges also offer students access to other students’ prof reviews. You can get an idea about their style of teaching, pros and cons and how tough they are.
Consider Your Style
Are you an early riser or a late sleeper? Sometimes, you don’t get much of a choice about class times and you have to take the section that’s open. But, if you would prefer getting up and knocking class out, or if you are a college athlete, or if evening classes seem more your style, try to schedule your classes accordingly.
Location. Location. Location.
If possible, try to group classes according to geography. If your college has more than one campus or is spread out, save yourself the stress of trying to get across campus before your next class, if at all possible.
You may want to build in a block of time between classes to get to the next location or be able to grab a cup of coffee before your next class. Caffeine may be necessary to face that tough prof or a challenging class.
Do a Practice Run
If you are new to the campus, once you have your schedule solidified, you will want to practice your route to get from one class to the next. Figure out what building and room you are in and the smartest way to navigate from your dorm to your classroom. Many profs don’t allow students to enter the classroom or lecture hall late and you don’t want to be locked out–especially on the first day!
Prepare for Class
Make sure there is no required reading before class. If you have online access to the syllabi, read them over before classes begins. You’ll know what textbooks and other supplies you will need to buy.
Plan Ahead to Choose Your Schedule
With a little bit of forethought and some online searching, you can map out a college schedule that is perfect for your needs.
